When fifteen-year-old Mary is suddenly orphaned she must leave city life in Toronto to live with an uncle she has never met in Georgian Bay. Mary is known as a difficult girl and is quite surprised when she arrives at her uncle's manor and the staff is so informal with her. Mary is not used to this but soon becomes content in the company of the staff. When Mary hears crying in the night, she discovers she has a cousin, Olive, who is being hidden in the attic for supposed health reasons. Mary and Olive quickly become friends. This is a new experience for Mary who has never had a friend. Mary also comes to know the sister of one of the staff. Mary loves her time with this young Metis girl named Sophie. Sophie shows her the joys of nature and companionship. When Mary's aunt returns to the manor, things change for the worse. Can Mary and her new friends contact her uncle in time to expose her aunt and save Olive? Read this Red Maple 2023 nominee book to find out. Note: there is some use of mild language in this book.
