This Red Maple 2023 nominee is told from the perspectives of Autumn and Cody. Autumn is a popular girl at school who seems to have everything going for her. Cody has a difficult life with an abusive father. When Cody decides to run away, Autumn finds Cody in very bad shape and secretly takes him to the safety of her father's backyard studio. Autumn knows that helping Cody is the right thing to do, but doesn't like lying to her parents. When her parents find out about Cody, they do everything they can to help. Cody is unsure of this new support system. Autumn begins to struggle with the challenges of being in the popular crowd. This is a story of friendship, family, and staying true to yourself. This book is a great read. Note: the book does deal with racism, abuse, and has some mild language.
