Tremendous Things By: Susin Nielsen

Genre: Realistic Fiction
Age Recommendation:  Grade 7/8

Wilbur is in grade 9 and at the beginning of the year he was desperately hoping high school would represent a fresh start.  Unfortunately, an embarrassing incident that happened in grade 7 has followed him to high school thanks to Tyler Kertz.  On the plus side, Wilbur has a good friend named Alex and a best friend in Sal.  Sal is Wilbur's elderly neighbour and the pair have a wonderful relationship.  Wilbur is in the school band and when a band from Paris does a week long exchange at his school, Wilbur hosts a girl named Charlie who he finds very attractive.  With the help of his friends, Wilbur is determined to become his best self before his school bands goes to Paris for their exchange.  This is a funny and touching story.  Wilbur, whose favourite book is Charlotte's Web is a lovable character. I thoroughly enjoyed this Red Maple 2022 nominee, but caution readers that the embarrassing incident for Wilbur might make them feel a little uncomfortable.  This book is intended for mature readers.
