Genre: Realistic Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 7/8
Nira's family left Guyana to give her a better life and her parents have big plans for her. They want her to become a doctor, but Nira has a dream to become a musician, a dream that she feels sure her parents won't support. At school, Nira has trouble fitting in but has one true friend, Emily. At home, she has a special relationship with her grandmother, who is funny and supportive. This book is an excellent window into Nira's world - trying to fit in at school, working to follow her dream, and dealing with her protective parents. I thoroughly enjoyed this Red Maple 2020 nominee and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys realistic fiction.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
