Genre: Historical Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 6+
The inspiration for "Esperanza Rising" came from the author's grandmother who immigrated from Mexico to California as a young woman. In this story, when Esperanza's father dies suddenly, she and her mother are forced to leave their once beautiful ranch and rich lives to live in California where they become workers on a farm. It is a major readjustment for Esperanza and she has a number of challenges to overcome, but she persists and realizes that money isn't what makes you rich in life. This is an interesting read that will find you rooting for Esperanza as she works to find a new life for herself in California.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
