Genre: Historical Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 4-8
This story begins in 1885 in Ontario, when Indian Agents come to a community of Native people and tell them they must move so settlers can claim the land they are on. The Natives have a choice, move and try to find land that can sustain them or move to the reserve where they are promised food and education for their children. Since winter is coming, Red Wolf's family chooses to go to the reserve. Shortly after, the Indian Agent comes and tells them that Red Wolf must leave the reserve to attend a residential school. As we travel with Red Wolf to residential school, we are given a look at the terrible conditions he must endure. When Red Wolf graduates from the school, he wants nothing more than to farm his own land, but finds himself facing racism and ends up returning to the reserve. This is a heart-wrenching story that provides a window into residential schools. If you enjoy this book, look for other Jennifer Dance books - "Hawk" and "Paint".
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
