Amal is twelve years old and loves school. She dreams of becoming a teacher one day. When her mother needs time to recover from having a baby, Amal must stay home to care for her sisters and manage the household. During this time, Amal longs to return to school. One afternoon she finds a moment to slip away to the village market. On her walk home, she is lost in her thoughts and gets hit by a car. Instead of being concerned for her safety, the man who gets out of the car is more interested in taking her pomegranate for his mother. Amal is tired of people taking advantage of her and speaks up against the man. Amal quickly regrets this when she finds out that the man is the local landlord and has a lot of power over the villagers and her family. Amal is forced to move to the landlord's estate and act as a handmaid to his mother. How will Amal cope with being away from her beloved family? Will she ever return home? This book provides a look at life for many people in Pakistan and teaches us that it is always important to stand up for what you believe in.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
