Genre: Realistic Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 7/8
Sadia is fifteen years old and loves playing basketball. Sadia is Muslim and wants to remain true to her beliefs, but sometimes finds herself feeling conflicted. Sadia's best friend Mariam is also Muslim and has begun removing her hijab at school everyday. Sadia considers how much easier it would be to play basketball if she were not wearing her head scarf. When a new student, Amira, arrives at school, Sadia begins to see things differently. Amira is from Syria, like Sadia's family, but Amira's family are refugees. Spending time with Amira helps Sadia to gain the courage to remain true to her beliefs and stand up for herself. This book is a 2019 Red Maple Award nominee. I found the story to be a realistic look at friendship and the challenges of growing up. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to fans of realistic fiction.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
