Wenjack By: Joseph Boyden

Age Recommendation: YA, Grade 7/8
Genre: Historical fiction

Based on the story of Chanie Wenjack, a young Ojibwe boy, who ran away from a Northern Ontario residential school. The story is told through the eyes of spirits of the forest as they witness Chanie's attempt to find his way home. I found this story to be both heart-breaking and powerful. It would make an excellent classroom read aloud, but students should be provided with background information about residential schools prior to reading.
