Sarah and her mother are having a hard time getting by on her mother's waitress salary. Then one day, they learn that Sarah's mother has inherited the estate of her great aunt, a woman Sarah has never met. Their lives change for the better when they move from Ontario to New Brunswick to begin their new lives. The story is told from the perspective of young Sarah, as well as, diary entries from Aunt Sarah's journal.
