The Hundred Dresses By: Eleanor Estes

Genre: Realistic/Historical Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 2 and up

This short story is set in the past, but its message is very relevant today. Wanda is a young Polish girl in a Connecticut school who is tormented by her classmates for wearing the same faded blue dress everyday. When Wanda tells her classmates that she has a hundred dresses in her closet, the teasing increases. When Wanda and her family move to the city to escape the discrimination they face, Wanda's classmates learn something about themselves and Wanda. This is an excellent story about bullying and learning to treat others with respect. I highly recommend this as a classroom read aloud.
