Alice is 12 years old and lives with her father who is a history professor. The two share an unusual hobby, they love to recreate recipes from the past. They've made gelatin from scratch, peacock pie, and a wide range of dishes. On the advice of her friend's older sister, Alice keeps her strange hobby a secret believing that her classmates won't understand and will make fun of her. This is working fine until her father's new girlfriend signs them up for a reality tv cooking show. Alice isn't thrilled about this, but some unexpected surprises are in store for Alice and she ends up gaining friends and confidence from the experience. This Silver Birch 2022 nominee is an enjoyable read. It's fun to learn about the recipes from the past and Alice even ends up trying to solve the mystery of who is sabotaging the contestants on the cooking competition.
