The Barren Grounds has been described as "Narnia meets traditional Indigenous stories". The book tells the story of Morgan and Eli who are Indigenous children who've been forced to leave their home communities and have been placed in foster care in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Eli is a talented artist and Morgan is a gifted writer who loves to read. When Morgan invites Eli to relax in the unfinished attic, the adventure begins.. The two find a portal to another world with talking animals who walk on two legs. The creatures of this world need help to stop the never ending winter brought on by a greedy man. Eli and Morgan join their new friends in the quest to bring the summer birds back to Misewa. This is an exciting story that not only helps the reader learn more about Indigenous stories, but is a story of friendship and personal growth of Morgan and Eli. I recommend this book to those who enjoy fantasy and those who like realistic fiction. A sequel to this book will be released in September 2021.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
