Genre: Realistic Fiction/Graphic Novel
Age Recommendation: Grade 7/8
"Surviving the City" is a Red Maple 2020 nominee. In this book, we meet best friends, Dez and Miikwan. Miikwan is dealing with the recent loss of her mother. Dez lives with her grandmother, but her grandmother's health is failing and Dez fears she will be moved to a group home. The girls find strength in their friendship, community, and culture. This book provides information about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. This is a quick and interesting read that helps the reader learn more about some of the challenges faced by Indigenous people in Canada.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
