Genre: Historical Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 6+
Lesia is a fifteen-year-old Ukrainian who dreams of moving to Canada with her family. In Ukraine, she and her family work hard on their master's land and have little chance of improving their lives. Lesia and her older brother work hard to save money for the family's passage to Canada. When they arrive in Manitoba, they find that a lot of the free farmland has already been settled, but are lucky to find a claim near another Ukrainian family. Their first year in Canada has many trials including clearing their land, adapting to the Canadian climate, learning a new language, and facing racism. The worst comes when World War One breaks out and Lesia's brother and father are placed in an internment camp because they are considered enemy aliens. This is a story of perseverance and it helped me to better understand the challenges that Ukrainian immigrants to Canada faced. If you like learning more about Canada, this is a good book for you. This book would work well with the grade 6 social studies topic, Communities in Canada.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
