Genre: Historical Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 5+
Dawnie loves baseball and Jackie Robinson. She is the top student at her school and dreams about becoming a doctor one day. This dream seems impossible to achieve since her segregated school is poorly funded and has basic materials that are falling apart. Dawnie dreams about going to Prettyman Coburn, an all-white school, where everything is shiny and new. When the law says that segregation must end, Dawnie gets to do just that, but most of the teachers and students do not want Dawnie to be integrated and make everyday challenging for her. Dawnie perseveres and does well at Prettyman Coburn and even makes a friend. This well-written book is written as a diary and is very interesting and informative. The book includes historical information and photographs at the end to further explain the Civil Rights Movement in America. I highly recommend this book.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
