Genre: Realistic Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 7/8
Daniel is a student at Erie Hills where he is the reluctant back-up kicker but is actually more of a water boy. Daniel enjoys reading, is humourous and smart, but he suffers from some behaviours that make life difficult for him at times. For starters, Daniel endures strange habits that he calls Zaps. One of his Zaps is that he can't write the number 6 - this makes it hard to get an A in math. Daniel also has to go through what he calls the Routine every night before going to bed which includes brushing his teeth a particular number of times and taking a certain number of steps while complete the Routine. The Routine is very stressful for Daniel, and can often take hours to complete, but he believes something bad will happen if he doesn't do it. Daniel does his very best to keep all of his "crazy" behaviours to himself until Psycho Sara who never speaks to anyone, starts talking to him. Through their friendship, Daniel learns a lot about himself and helps Sara too. This is an excellent book that provides a window into the world of people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
