Genre: Historical Fiction (Based on a True Story)
Age Recommendation: Grade 7/8 - YA
I am a huge fan of Deborah Ellis. She has the ability to bring world issues to life in a way that is both appealing and easy to understand for adolescents. I thought I had read all of her books and then I happily found "Moon At Nine" in the public library. This story, based on actual events recounted to Deborah Ellis, is set in Iran. The main character, Farrin, shows us what life is like in the city of Tehran for the daughter of a wealthy family. At the time, the country is at war with Iraq and nightly bombings are a part of life. Farrin leads a lonely life until Sadira, a new student, arrives at school. The two form a special friendship that turns into a deep love for each other. In Iran, this type of love is not permitted. If they are going to be together, Farrin and Sadira must find a way to escape Iran. This is another brilliant book from Deborah Ellis that helps us to better understand the difficulties young people around the world must cope with.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
