Genre: Historical Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 6+
Rose is thirteen and struggles with school. She has been held back twice and no matter how hard she tries, the letters on the page just seem jumbled and do not make any sense. Rose wishes and prays she did not have to go to school, but her parents want her to get an education. Rose lives in Halifax, near the harbour. It's 1917 and Halifax Harbour, where her father and brother work, is a busy place sending supplies and soldiers off to Europe for the war. Other than her school troubles, Rose has a happy family and is a wonderful story teller, that is until December 6, 1917 when two ships collide in Halifax Harbour and her whole world is changed forever. This book provides an interesting insight into the Halifax Explosion through the eyes of Rose. It is a story of courage and is highly recommended to those who enjoy learning about the past through stories.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
