Paul Fisher and his family have just moved from Houston to Tangerine County in Florida where his father has accepted a new job. Tangerine County is a lot different from Houston. There are muck fires burning, hordes of mosquitoes, regular lightning strikes and a sinkhole that swallows part of Paul's new school. Paul has an older brother, Erik, who is a high school football star. Paul is wary of his brother. Erik is not who he appears to be and Paul knows there is something more to the story of how Paul was nearly blinded. As the story moves forward, Paul makes some unlikely friendships and learns the truth about his older brother. This story is told in the form of Paul's journal entries. Although it is not always a very believable story, it is interesting and kept me turning the pages to see how things would be resolved.
