Broken Strings is a Red Maple 2021 award nominee. Shirli lives in New York where she attends junior high. She loves singing and performing and tries out for a part in the school play, "Fiddler on the Roof". Shirli is disappointed when she doesn't receive the role she wanted, but throws herself into her assigned role. This leads her to explore her grandfather's attic in search of costumes and props. She finds an old violin belonging to her grandfather, a person she thought didn't like music. In this story, we learn a lot about the Holocaust through Shirli's grandfather. This is also a story of friendship as Shirli gets to know her castmates. I recommend this book to people who enjoy realistic or historical fiction.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
