Aisulu lives in Mongolia with her parents and older brother, Serik. They live with their extended family and lead a nomadic life, moving their herds to allow for their survival. Aisulu has noticed that her brother limps and seems to be in pain, but he says nothing about it. When the pair become trapped during a summer blizzard, Aisulu brings up the limp and pain, which her brother denies. When Serik breaks his leg, Aisulu tells her father about Serik's troubles. Serik's parents take him to a faraway hospital and Aisulu is left with her aunt and uncle who she doesn't have a close relationship with. During their time apart, Aisulu rescues an orphaned eagle and with the help of her uncle, she trains the eagle and prepares for an eagle hunting competition. This is an unusual thing for a girl to do, so Aisulu must be courageous. This is a very interesting story about family and believing in yourself. The author spent time in Mongolia with Kazakh nomads, so the story provides a window into the life led by these people. I highly recommend this book.
