Genre: Realistic Fiction/YA
Age Recommendation: Grade 7/8
Deborah Ellis is one of my favourite authors. She writes about the challenges faced by young people around the world in a way that readers can readily relate to. In this story, we follow three illegal teenaged migrants, Abdul, Rosalia and Cheslav, as they make the dangerous journey from their home countries to England. Their story is gripping and heart-wrenching. The difficult world of these young migrants is brought to life for the reader and helps the reader better understand their reasons for leaving their home countries. This book is highly recommended and would be a great read aloud in an intermediate classroom hoping to gain a better understanding of those fleeing their homes for the safety of unknown lands.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
