Shade is the runt of his bat colony, but is determined to prove himself. He becomes separated from the colony during their migration and has an adventure of his own as he tries to reunite with the colony. I am not usually a fan of animal fiction, but found this very enjoyable. Shade meets interesting characters on his journey and the book teaches some real facts about bats too. This is the first book in the series and would make a great classroom read aloud.
