Lyddie By: Katherine Paterson


Genre: Historical Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 6+

This story is set in 1840s America. Lyddie is a young girl who must go to work in a textile mill to help pay off her family's debts. The conditions are terrible, but Lyddie is determined to earn enough to regain her family's farm and reunite her family. This story includes a number of historical moments, including child labour, the rights of women textile mill workers and the Underground Railroad. Some background knowledge about this time period would help the reader to better enjoy this book.
