Genre: Realistic Fiction
Age Recommendation: YA/Grade 7/8
Palmer lives in Waymer where there is an annual tradition of pigeon shooting. His father has even won the pigeon shooting competition in the past. The town boys look forward to turning 10 when they can become a wringer during the pigeon shoot. Being a wringer involves twisting the neck of a wounded pigeon to put it out of its misery. Palmer does not want to be a wringer, but how can he admit that in a town that looks forward to the pigeon shoot? When a pigeon taps on Palmer's window and unexpectedly becomes his beloved pet, things get even more complicated. Palmer must decide how he will protect his pigeon and avoid becoming a wringer. This certainly was not my most favourite Jerry Spinelli book. I did not enjoy the idea of the pigeon shoot or the way Palmer's "friends" treated him. It is interesting to see how Palmer deals with the situation he is in, though.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
