Genre: Realistic Fiction
Age Recommendation: Grade 7/8
When John drops his younger sister off at the community centre for her art class, he stumbles upon a group of dancers preparing for a Pow Wow. John's mother is a First Nation woman and he's been to Pow Wows before, but this time he finds that the drums are calling him to dance. As John embraces his heritage, he faces discrimination - he's a red head and some people think he doesn't belong at the cultural dance classes. John learns to believe in himself and find balance in his life. This is a quick read and provides an interesting look at the challenges a person of mixed heritage may face in trying to belong.
I am a book loving elementary school teacher librarian. This blog reflects my personal opinions about the books I have read and is intended to be used by students and teachers who are looking for a book recommendation.
