Age Recommendation: Grade 5+
Margaret Pokiak is young Inuit girl who wants to go to school. Her father and step-sister have been to school and discourage her without explaining why, but Margaret persists with her desire to attend school. Eventually, Margaret does go to residential school and ends up having to stay there for 2 years without seeing her parents. Life is difficult at school - punishments are severe, only English is allowed to be spoken and traditions must be abandoned. When Margaret finally does return home, there are many challenges for her there too. This is an exceptional account of Margaret's actual experience in residential school. It is written in easy to understand language and is beautifully illustrated. "A Stranger At Home" provides details about Margaret's adjustment to life at home after being at residential school. Picture book versions of both books are available, "When I Was Eight" and "Not My Girl".
